UNSTRUCTURED FIELD TRIP OPTIONS

Museum of the Rockies (600 W Kagy Blvd, Bozeman, MT 59717)

Museum of the Rockies is one of the closest venues to campus “with six primary exhibits and two-to-three changing exhibits each year… these showcases offer a compelling blend of science, art, culture, and history.” The museum is offering a discounted admission rate of $13.50 per conference participant. You must be registered for the NGPHC and present your conference badge at the front desk to receive the discounted rate. The museum is also hosting a traveling exhibit from the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes the week of the NGPHC.

Additionally, Dr. Siriana Lundgren, Director of Cultural History at MoR, is offering two private behind-the-scenes tours of MoR’s cultural collections. The first tour is 2:30 to 3:30 and the second is 3:30 to 4:30PM. Space is limited and each session is capped at 10. Gallatin History Museum (317 W Main St., Bozeman, MT 59715)

The Gallatin History Museum is on Main Street in Downtown Bozeman. The building used to be the county jail and now operates as the county museum. “The jail and museum host the history of escapes, a hanging, and mysteries around Gallatin County. Through collecting, preserving, and sharing Gallatin County memories we ignite a sense of appreciation in our collective heritage and inspire ongoing curiosity.” The museum is offering free admission for registered NGPHC attendees. You must present your conference badge for admission.

The Extreme History Project – “Murders, Madams, and Mediums: Bozeman’s Dark Side” Walking Tour (234 E. Mendenhall, Bozeman, Montana 59715)

The Extreme History Project is a local public history nonprofit organization that offers summer walking tours in Downtown Bozeman. They are offering a private tour for registered NGPHC attendees at 4:00 PM beginning at their building (234 E Mendenhall St.). The “Murders, Madams, and Mediums” tour is among their most popular offerings. “From horrific murders to notorious madams and mediums communicating with the spirit world, Bozeman’s darker history comes to light in a walking tour designed to send a shiver up your spine. The Army Period in Yellowstone, Dr. Tom Rust Book Talk (Alumni Legacy Lounge)

Dr. Tom Rust (Montana State University, Billings) will give a book talk on the Army period in Yellowstone National Park. He is the author of Watching Over Yellowstone: The US Army’s Experience in America’s First National Park, 1886-1918 (University of Kansas Press, 2020). The talk will take place in the Alumni Legacy Lounge in the Student Union Building on campus from 3:00 to 4:00PM.
